The morning after I sang the Mozart Requiem with SLVA, I hopped on a plane to go to San Diego for five days with my mom and dad (and for one day, Bret) in celebration of their 43rd anniversary. It feels like an eternity since then, but it was a much-needed relaxing and regenerating break. Thanks to my supportive husband and for family that helped with the boys while I was away, for allowing me little hiatuses once in awhile; they make me a better mom and wife.
First stop: Mount Soledad Veterans Memorial in La Jolla. The cross has a colorful history. Wikipedia explains, "Beginning in 1989, almost ten years before the immediate area around the cross was turned into a war memorial, and ongoing to the present, the Mt. Soledad Cross had been involved in a continuous litigation regarding its legal status.
According to the cross's opponents' interpretation of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and the No Preference Clause of the California Constitution, it is illegal to display a religious symbol, such as a Christian cross, on public land, as it demonstrates preference to a specific religion and thus violates the separation of church and state.
Judges have sided with plaintiffs on multiple occasions and ruled that the cross is illegal and had to be removed or sold to the highest bidder. Defenders of the cross explored several options for preserving the cross." Check out the rest of the story online. It's crazy and fascinating if you're interested in church/state issues.
Next stop, La Jolla Cove. It I were a sea lion, this is where I would live.
Look how happy they are! No wonder they all left San Francisco Bay.
It was fun hanging out with Bret for a little while, even though he could only stay a day and just wanted to "go on drives" like an old man.
Next on the list, rent a Boston whaler and see Coronado and San Diego from the water. I can now say I've seen the Coronado Bay Bridge from underneath!
This was genuinely fun.
How come this never happens to people on The Bachelor?!
Note the boat named Cougar, to prove I was thinking of my honey while I was away :-)
